Das bekannte Fotofachgeschäft Foto Marlin in Basel ist auf behördliche Anordnung geschlossen worden. Der Schritt kam für Kunden und offenbar auch für die Angestellten des Ladens überraschend.

Basel 's well-known specialist photography store Foto Marlin has been closed on official orders. The step came as a surprise to both customers and apparently also to the employees of the store on Aeschenvorstadt. Last week the shop was still open. There is a notice on the shop window stating that the photography store has been sealed by the Canton of Basel -Stadt's enforcement department. The enforcement department is a division of the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Office.

It is used when it comes to auctioning items of significant value. The proceeds are used, in the case of companies that are in financial difficulties, to cover the outstanding claims of creditors, as far as possible. The authorities warn at the entrance that the removal of the seal would have legal consequences. There is a threat of a prison sentence of up to three years. A seal breach is no minor offense. The sealing is intended to prevent, in the event of a company's bankruptcy, that valuables are removed with which outstanding claims, for example from suppliers or lenders, could be settled. The sealing therefore also applies to the business owner himself. Further operation of the company is thus prevented by official order. As this editorial knows from a reliable source, the two employees were sent home on Friday. The two were confronted with a fait accompli. They were told that their employment relationship was immediately terminated. This editorial has a letter from the cantonal insolvency office. It states that this letter replaces any notice of termination if no termination had previously been issued. For the duration of the notice period, there is a claim to benefits from the unemployment insurance, it says in the letter. To assert this, the affected persons should «immediately» report to the Regional Employment Agency (RAV). Regarding the outstanding wages, they also have the option of submitting an «application for insolvency compensation». The exact reasons for the closure are unknown to this editorial. An inquiry remained unanswered by the business. It is unclear why the authorities did not also take the website offline. On the internet, it is still possible to order goods and pay by credit card, advance payment or Twint. An insider warns this editorial: «Anyone who orders now will never see their money again». The business with «proper» cameras has become increasingly difficult in recent years, the better the cameras of mobile phones have become. This technological leap has led to the fact that many people find the possibilities and image quality of their mobile phones sufficient for everyday pictures – and thus lowered the demand for special cameras. For specialist shops like Foto Marlin, this has had noticeable economic consequences. To survive, they had to increasingly turn to niche offerings. Foto Marlin itself was still optimistic a few years ago: In July 2021, the specialist retailer even opened a second branch in the center of Basel. The press release, riddled with many spelling errors, can still be found on the website. The shop on Marktgasse itself is no longer in Marlin's hands. After a little over a year, in November 2022, the camera manufacturer Leica took over the premises itself. A monobrand store was created on Marktgasse – and Marlin had to do without the sale of Leica cameras in the future. The shop on Aeschenvorstadt was also the scene of a spectacular crime in the past. In 2007, a Lithuanian drove into the shop window in the middle of the night with a stolen car and, together with an accomplice, took away many expensive cameras and lenses worth a total of over 123,000 francs. Four years later, the same perpetrator tried it again in the same way. This time, however, the deed failed because Marlin had meanwhile installed protective measures. In 2015, the Lithuanian, who had committed similar acts throughout Switzerland, had to answer before the Basel Criminal Court. In total, he is said to have handled stolen goods worth 820,000 francs and caused property damage of around 320,000 francs. The court sentenced him to six and a half years in prison
