The Many Hats of Monika Bättig: Farmer, Baker, and Creative Entrepreneur
Farm Entrepreneurship, Family-Run Farm, Rural Living

Monika Bättig's journey from a baker's apprentice to a multi-faceted rural entrepreneur is a testament to adaptability and passion. Alongside her husband Martin, who runs a pig breeding farm in Wetzwil, Monika has successfully merged her love for food, design, and community into a thriving business venture. She oversees an e-shop, curates a cozy waiting lounge, and markets both locally produced and artisanal products, all while juggling family life with two young daughters.

Family Bättig nearly rivals the Bremen Town Musicians with their own collection of beloved animals. This portrait actually features Monika Bättig, but it was important to her to include the family in the frame.

Minutes later, farmer Martin and the two children, Eliane and Selina, stand united with their favorite pets in front of the garden shed's wooden wall. Born in 1988, Monika grew up in Wilihof LU, where her parents ran a mixed farm. After completing school, she trained as a baker-confectioner in Büron LU, spending a few years in the profession before shifting gears.

'I wanted to experience as much as possible and try different jobs while I was still young,' she explains. Her career path is diverse, including stints in food service, a butcher shop, and even working at a ski resort in Davos GR, where she lived in a mountain hut and commuted daily on skis. The variety of industries, teams, and people she met during this time fascinated her.

Monika met her future husband, Martin Bättig, when she was just 19, through a mutual connection at work - her colleague happened to be Martin's sister. The couple married ten years ago, around the time their first daughter, Eliane, was born; their second daughter, Selina, is two years younger. Although they started in the village, they now live in the loft of a large farmhouse, sharing the building with Martin's parents and a rental tenant.

Die Geschäftsidee von Monika Bättig

The property is well-organized, with clearly separated entrances and outdoor spaces to ensure everyone's privacy. Martin comes from a long line of pig breeders - his grandfather, father, and now he are all in the business. While Martin primarily handles the livestock, Monika found her niche in the business by opening a small shop. Initially reluctant to have visitors wandering near the stables, Martin eventually conceded to her proposal for an outdoor bar-style setup.

Monika transformed an old, dilapidated party wagon into a charming 'Wärte-Pläuschen' (waiting pleasure) lounge. It's a place where customers waiting for their orders can relax, read books, and enjoy the atmosphere. She also manages the farm's e-shop and occasionally helps with harvesting fruits like apples and pears. The farm produces a variety of jams, syrups, and apple juice, which Monika sells alongside artisanal products from neighboring farms.

While she's not heavily involved in the daily physical labor of the farm, Monika has carved out a role that utilizes her creativity and organizational skills, ensuring the family business remains dynamic and connected to the community.
