FBI Director Kash Patel says agents are at the scene and 'responding to the apparent vehicle ramming and active shooter situation'
The suspect who drove his truck into a synagogue in Michigan is “deceased” after security staff opened fire on the vehicle, local authorities have confirmed. Officers responded to reports of an “active shooter” at Temple Israel, a synagogue in West Bloomfield outsideOakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said the suspect “breached the facility by driving into it”, later adding that they “drove in through doors” of the synagogue.
Footage of the incident shows the suspect “was travelling with purpose down the hall”, the Sheriff said. “Security did engage the suspect with gunfire,” he told reporters, adding that one individual was left “deceased in the vehicle”. A member of security staff at the synagogue sustained injuries after being hit by the driver and was taken to hospital for treatment, Bouchard said.Asked about a fire that broke out after the incident, he said: “Something ignited in the vehicle. That’s a work in progress. We’re through an abundance of caution clearing the vehicle for IEDs or any explosives. We’ve got a significant number of bomb dogs on site.” Bouchard did not confirm whether the suspect died as a result of the shots fired by the synagogue’s security staff. Earlier, FBI Director Kash Patel said agents were at the scene and “responding to the apparent vehicle ramming and active shooter situation”. Footage from the scene showed dozens of police cars outside the building. Police said nearby schools had been placed on lockdown. Temple Israel calls itself the nation’s largest Reform Judaism synagogue, with 12,000 members. according to its website. It has an early childhood education centre and offers educational programmes for families and adults. The website says the synagogue is “passionate about helping Jewish communities across the globe” and that its mission is to “create a community building through the lens of Reform Judaism”. The Jewish Federation of Detroit earlier advised all Jewish organisations in the area to go into lockdown. “We are aware of an active security incident at Temple Israel. Law enforcement are responding. Our Jewish agencies are currently in precautionary lockdown. We ask community members to stay away from the area at this time,” the group posted to social media. Michigan State Police urged locals to keep clear of the area. “We are asking for community members to stay away from the area to allow for police response,” a spokesman said in a statement.This is breaking news story and will be updated.
