Das Schweizer Speedteam continues to impress. In Kitzbühel, Marco Odermatt won the Super-G . Only an Austrian could prevent a Swiss triple victory. Because he finished ahead of Stefan Rogentin and Franjo von Allmen. It must sound like a threat to all other nations: «On Saturday we'll put another one on top», promises Marco Odermatt . Almost a Swiss triple victory came in Kitzbühel already on Friday.
Only the Austrian Raphael Haaser had something against it in the Super-G and prevented Swiss championships with second place. Haaser lost 100ths of a second to Odermatt and pushed Stefan Rogentin and Franjo von Allmen to third and fourth place. Despite this «slip-up», the Swiss team underlined its current dominance. In the ninth speed race, it was the seventh Swiss victory, plus fifteen (!) podium places. The Kitzbühel downhill on Saturday can definitely come. That this victory for Odermatt was much more than a prelude, as he had described the Kitzbühel Super-G beforehand, became clear after the race. The Nidwaldner spoke of the most important victory in a Super-G so far and added: «I'm going to leave Kitzbühel satisfied now, no matter what.» And he meant: Whatever happens in the downhill. It's probably also a bit of self-protection. Because the fact that the downhill victory on the Streif is the last piece of the puzzle that is still missing in his dream career doesn't change with this Super-G victory. He himself said: «But it takes a little pressure off.» Because at least one question is now answered: the question of his first victory in Kitzbühel. After three podium places in the downhill and one in the Super-G, Odermatt finally takes a golden chamois home. Or maybe even two at the end? How Odermatt won the Super-G was impressive. On a challenging course that demanded many casualties, he found the perfect mix. He himself spoke of a clever race and hit the nail on the head. Odermatt dosed the risk where necessary, without braking himself too hard. The most impressive thing was shown in a left turn on the Seidelalm. The track crossed the downhill track there, resulting in deep furrows in the snow and thus blows on the skis. The athletes fell at this key gate almost in a row – and sometimes also seriously. Alexis Pinturault and Florian Loriot were worst hit, who had to be flown to the hospital by helicopter. Odermatt said afterwards: «I already saw when inspecting that it hits enormously there. But it's the Streif. Of course the course setting was challenging, but that's how a Super-G should be. You only have the inspection and then you have to have a plan in mind.» And in this regard, the Nidwaldner is a master. He anticipates brilliantly. But above all, he brings the technical prerequisites to react spontaneously if the planned plan turns out to be wrong. In the bumpy key turn, he chose a relatively wide line and said: «The Streif sometimes asks something of you, too.» For Odermatt, it was his 14th Super-G victory in his career. With this, he climbs to third place in the all-time rankings. Only Aksel Lund Svindal (17 victories) and Hermann Maier (24) are now ahead of him. And both were live at the finish line at Odermatt's Super-G victory on Friday. Besides Odermatt, Stefan Rogentin also wrote a special story. Because the 30-year-old should actually be in bed with the flu. But he doesn't. Before the first downhill training, he thought: «What I'm doing there is reckless. I shouldn't really drive. But then you do it anyway.» He also drove the Super-G with feverish, glowing eyes. «But the short race time of 1:13 minutes came in handy», he said. And how: He lost only three tenths of a second to Odermatt and classified himself for the second time in a row on third place in a Super-G. Even in Wengen, the preparation had not gone optimally. Rogentin crashed in training and subsequently suffered from severe headaches. After his podium finish in Kitzbühel, he said: «Although I am happy that I was able to perform in both races despite the problems – in the long term, this is probably not a solution that I should aim for.
