A viral image of a perfectly circular forest in Japan left many wondering if it was real or a digital illusion. A reverse image search confirmed the forest exists at 31.7306°N 131.3847°E in Miyazaki Prefecture. Planted in 1973, it's a scientific experiment studying how tree density affects growth and wood quality, as evidenced by the varying crown sizes across the concentric rings.
In the vast expanse of the internet, images often circulate with little context or verification. One such image that caught our attention is a striking aerial view of a dense, circular forest.
Ist dieser kreisförmige Wald real
The trees are arranged in concentric rings, creating a unique geometric pattern that stands out against the surrounding landscape. But is this forest real, or is it a product of digital manipulation? To find out, we decided to perform a 'reverse image search' to trace the origin of the photo. Using a specialized search engine, we uploaded the image and scanned the results.
It didn't take long to discover that this circular forest is indeed a real place. It is located in the Miyazaki Prefecture on the island of Kyushu, Japan, and was established in 1973. The forest serves a scientific purpose; by planting trees at varying densities within the circles, researchers aim to study how spacing affects tree growth and wood quality. The outer rings contain fewer trees with larger crowns, while the center is packed tight.
The image, captured by photographer Yuichi Yamazaki from a light aircraft, provides a clear view of this carefully constructed experimental plot. The surrounding responses to the image were mixed, with some viewers admiring its beauty and others suspecting it might be a hoax or a 'crop circle' for aliens.

However, the evidence confirms that it is a legitimate scientific installation. This 'Circle Forest' experiment has been ongoing for years, with researchers analyzing the data to optimize future forestry practices. So, the next time you see an image online that looks too good to be true, do a fact check. You might just find that reality is more fascinating than fiction.
