Fidelity Targets Trillions in Savings for Investment
Fidelity International, Asset Management, Europe

Fidelity International aims to bridge the gap between idle savings and active investment in Europe, focusing on the €13 trillion parked in bank accounts. The company plans to leverage upcoming regulatory changes in Germany and scale its active ETF offerings to capture this untapped market potential.

Europe represents a massive market for the global asset management industry, but a significant portion of its wealth remains underutilised in the capital markets. Samantha Ricciardi, Head of EMEA at Fidelity International, estimated the addressable Europe an market at approximately €34 trillion while noting that around €13 trillion is sitting idle in bank accounts and deposits.

Europas Anleger müssen Verantwortung für den Ruhestand übernehmen

The central challenge for asset managers is to shift some of this capital from saving to investing. This issue is becoming increasingly critical due to the aging population and declining birth rates, which are straining European pension systems. The traditional expectation that state systems can cover a substantial part of retirement savings is no longer sustainable, as the mathematics 'just doesn't work anymore'.

Consequently, individuals must take more responsibility for their financial futures. Fidelity is particularly interested in Germany, where new private pension instruments are expected to launch in early 2027, offering state support and tax incentives to encourage investment. The firm views this as a significant opportunity, estimating a market potential of around €35 billion annually.

Fidelity setzt auf ETF-Ausbau und Anleihenstrategien

Fidelity aims to participate through major distributors and the German fund platform FFB, with the goal of establishing itself as a key partner in European retirement savings. The firm also plans to scale up its Active Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs), which currently manage €17 billion, with the target of tripling this volume in the coming years.

Additionally, Ricciardi highlighted the strong demand for active fixed-income strategies, which saw inflows of €170 billion in the past year, contrasting with outflows from active equity strategies.
